Procedures for serum production

        1.    Dog - Use a 8 - 12 month old mixed breed dog, 60 - 100 pounds.

        2.    Do full lab work up to eliminate all possible disease problems.

        3.    Vaccinate against all local diseases, eliminate all parasites.

        4.    Do not use breeds or individuals known to have immune deficiency problems.

        5.    Make up Newcastle 1000 dose vial.

        6.    Place intravenous catheter in dog.

        7.    Inject 2 - 3 c.c. of Newcastle virus Intravenously (shock may occur!  Treat
with Intravenous fluids accordingly, DO NOT USE CORTICOSTEROIDS).

        8.    Timing is essential.  Draw  blood 11 - 12 hours post injection.
                    6 - 8 hours = interferon induction = useless against Distemper
                    11 - 12 hours = ? Anti viral factors = Very effective against Distemper
                                                    Virus     INVIVO.

        9.    Induction of Anti Distemper serum may only be done once to any dog.

        10.  Place jugular catheter.  Always use sterile technique!

        11.  Start Intravenous fluids.

        12.  Withdraw blood into 20c.c. syringes, and inject into 10c.c. blood vials
(sterile, no additive blood vials).  Allow blood to clot.

        13.  Centrifuge immediately after clotting for clear serum.  Do not allow Red
               blood cells to lyse.

        14.  Remove serum and place into sterile bottles.

        15.  Sterile bottles can be stored refrigerated for 3 - 5 years.

        16.  Cryo - precipitates may form after refrigeration.  This will cause clouding
of the serum if mixed.  This is not harmful.

        17.  Cryo - precipitates may be filtered out with a 0.02 micron filter.  Keep sterile
